Tampa / Lightning Season Poses Serious Threat

Lightning Season Poses Serious Threat

Lightning killed 20 people in the United States in 2018, and strikes injured dozens more.

Seven of the fatalities occurred in Florida, though none of them was in Hillsborough County. One of the Florida deaths was a 22-year-old man mud-bogging in White Springs. Another was a 53-year-old woman working in a farmer's field in Parkland.

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue deals with the aftermath of lightning strikes. Most entail property damage, but injuries and occasional deaths occur, too.

Lighting can strike almost anytime, anywhere. It is prevalent in summertime in the Tampa Bay area, sometimes called the Lightning Capital of North America, though that maxim might not be entirely accurate.

Regardless, it's wise to be wary. A lightning streak can be hotter than the surface of the sun, and encounters with people generally have bad consequences.

Here are some safety tips, culled from those provided by the National Weather Service, to help people avoid lightning's potentially hazardous effects:

  • It's never safe to be outdoors with a thunderstorm in the area. If you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike. Get indoors.

  •
  • Inside a building, stay away from plugged-in equipment and appliances, corded telephones, and plumbing. They can become electrified by a nearby lightning strike.

  •
  • Because they are metal and form a cage around occupants, vehicles are fairly safe in thunderstorms. The rubber tires provide no added security, contrary to popular belief.

  •
  • If stuck outside in a thunderstorm, don't lie on the ground or seek shelter beneath the lone tree in an area. If swimming or otherwise in the water, get out.

  •
  • Stay in a safe place for at least 30 minutes after you last hear thunder.

Perhaps the simplest and best advice, also provided by the National Weather Service: "When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors."
